You Never Know; Responding to Intuition by Arleen Lorrance If we proceed through life functioning with reason, taking logical steps forward, we will have an orderly life, even a comfortable life. All our preferences will be honored and we will feel secure in our choices. If we proceed through life responding only to our feelings, our days will be a little more erratic, more inconsistent, more directed by whim, but containing more colorful experiences. A balance between the two is more in order for daily living so that we can have steadiness and excitement simultaneously. The Way of Intuition Beyond these two paths, there is the Way of Intuition, following inner knowing as it arises and following it even if it defies reason and arouses cautionary feelings. Intuition is a guide that sees well past the present moment and opens the way to a future step that is waiting for us in the realm of the unexpected. Think of Frost’s poem, “The Road Not Taken.” He took the unbeaten path, and it made all the difference. Intuition has always been a major component in my life. It has led the way to choices I might never have made and then directed me through the unfolding ramifications. My relationship with intuition began when I was a small child. It was present when I was working on my coloring books, and out in the street-playground where I engaged in sports. Intuition instructed me to focus on excellence. It demanded that everything I did would be done to the best of my ability in the moment and that ability would be nurtured so that the next endeavor would be completed with even greater excellence. I have lived this way all my life. Intuition leads us to a yet-to-be-revealed future, if we are listening. It led me to a career in the theatre and then to The Love Principles and The Love Project and then to a half century of work in decimating unconditional love. It led to the vision written about in my book A Transformation of Humanity. I don’t know what more is ready to unfold but I wait in abundant expectancy. You never know what will spark the new. This is why we must be open to everything around us and be present to clues or spurs or unexpected moments. Staying Open to the Moment I was talking recently with someone who has spent his life as a talented architect. When he was a child, he was always focused on creativity, and he wanted to do something meaningful with his life and make an imprint on the world. One day he was walking past a construction site. A new building was going up. There was a drawing of what the building would look like. His intuition drew him closer to the billboard. At the bottom of the preview, he saw the name of the architect who had created the design. His whole being was immediately awakened. He saw that he could apply his creativity to this field. He could become an architect, design wonderful structures, and have his name become known as he made contributions to his city. A revelation. A guided step from his intuition. He might have passed by the construction site. He might never have looked at the billboard. He might never have focused on the name at the bottom. But his intuition drew him there. He looked. He saw. His life ahead was profoundly influenced. You Never Know We can reason our way through life. We can feel our way. And we can use our great inner knowing to open us to the unexpected and let ourselves be led to greater expressions than we ever knew were possible. I walk through my daily life with heightened awareness. I never just walk to my car. I consciously experience everything along the way of the familiar path, the colors, the configurations, the people I meet, the sky, the temperature, my feet touching the ground, etc. New possibilities can be sparked by anything I encounter along the way of my moments. And, they can happen at any age. I am 86 and ready for what might be next. I am excited and open. I am ready to bring my energy, my life force, my accumulated experiences, my knowledge, my wisdom and my full enthusiasm to what awaits me. You never know.
